Bibliography on 21st Century Leadership

On April 9, Amanda Madorno and I are leading a session at the Nonprofit Conference on 21st Century Leadership. The workshop highlights the ways in which the demands on leadership are changing in our times, and identifies strategies for leaders to build the skills they need to maintain effectiveness. I’ll be writing more about this in a future post, but I wanted to go ahead and post the bibliography for the session–as this conference is “going green” there is an emphasis on providing resources electronically, and this will allow me to point participants in the right direction.

Below is a bibliography of resources related to our themes of generational change, adaptive leadership, creativity and resilience.  They range from books (how old school!) to humorous takes on the generation gap.  Please consider adding your favorite resources by adding a comment on the bottom of this post for others to see.

Exporting Democracy?

I had a great conversation with a friend this week.  She had just returned from a vacation to Costa Rica, and we were discussing how disturbing it is to return to the US after being abroad—the ever-present advertising, the crappy food, the rat race.  I was telling her how I have dreamed of going abroad…

Babies in the River

I mentioned a while back that I would start sharing some stories and words of wisdom periodically on the blog.  These stories are probably familiar to many of you already, but they are classics worthy of revisiting periodically.  “Babies in the River” is a wonderful parable for the nonprofit sector.  It is meant to illustrate…

The Leadership Challenge as you’ve never seen it

On Saturday, students in the nonprofit leadership class I teach gave presentations on leadership books.  The group reviewing the Leadership Challenge did a creative video titled Leadership Challenged which could be described as ”The Nonprofit Sector meets The Office.”  It’s quite funny, and naturally, is available for your viewing pleasure on YouTube (click title above).  The class is…
