Bibliography on 21st Century Leadership

On April 9, Amanda Madorno and I are leading a session at the Nonprofit Conference on 21st Century Leadership. The workshop highlights the ways in which the demands on leadership are changing in our times, and identifies strategies for leaders to build the skills they need to maintain effectiveness. I’ll be writing more about this in a future post, but I wanted to go ahead and post the bibliography for the session–as this conference is “going green” there is an emphasis on providing resources electronically, and this will allow me to point participants in the right direction.

Below is a bibliography of resources related to our themes of generational change, adaptive leadership, creativity and resilience.  They range from books (how old school!) to humorous takes on the generation gap.  Please consider adding your favorite resources by adding a comment on the bottom of this post for others to see.

This was super helpful Laura – I went right to the seattle public library site and put the titles I haven’t read on hold.

Good luck with your workshop at the conference – wish I could be there!

Here are comments generated by participants in our 21st Century Leadership workshop. The discussion question was: What did your small groups talk about with regard to strategies to build the skills necessary to become an effective 21st century leader?

-Strengthfinders 2.0 is a great tool for helping build teams around complementary strengths
-Seek agreement and a middle way (when generations conflict)
-Observe that the right side of our chart is more associated with femininity, and therefore women may more naturally gravitate toward these leadership practices
-Shared ownership promotes 21st century leadership
-Recognize that organizations tend to shift to the left (old ways of leading) in a crisis. Establishing trust helps.
-The younger generation only knows and recognizes the new type of leadership
-The trends we discussed are encouraging in terms of leadership succession
-Take to extreme, the new approach may cause paralysis—some blend with old approach still needed
-Important to pass experience, history on
-Both sides (generations/types of leaders) must adjust
-People may hold differing perspectives regarding how far your organization has shifted
-Use mistakes to learn and try again
-Transparency and visibility is a nonprofit challenge
